The Forbidden Black Rice

Why was Purple Rice Forbidden?

Purple Rice is a trendy name given Black Rice, due to it turning purple when cooked.  It was known in ancient Asian cultures as a rare black rice that provided life enhancing properties and often was forbidden to consume outside of royalty.  Today, Purple Rice has been introduced to other cultures as a drink and decorative addition to dishes.  Scientist began to research the rice due to it’s dark bran (outer shell) and found it consistently tested high in nutrients but the anthocyanin antioxidant levels made this rice a gem among superfoods.

What are anthocyanin antioxidants?

Purple foods such as blueberries and purple rice contain anthocyanins or pigments.  These pigments are high in unique anthocyanin antioxidants.  Anthocyanins are special because unlike other antioxidants that are only fat soluble, anthocyanins are water soluble.  This means they can reach parts of the body and blood stream and carry the fight against free radicals throughout the body and get to areas that are normally unobtainable.  Purple rice contains up to 8x the potency of anthocyanins in comparison to blueberries.

Why are anthocyanins important?

Modern diets are so high in sodium, crude fats, sugars and carbohydrates that the human body is unable to process it all properly.  The results are what we refer to as ‘Modern Day Diseases’.  These include high blood pressure, high cholesterol (LDL), high blood sugar, arthritis and obesity.  

Anthocyanins target all these common illnesses and more!  Asian scientist began to study purple rice due to its traditional history as a ‘health restoring’ food.  They found there was strong evidence that ancient emperors were correct to believe it could help with longevity of life due to the high anthocyanin content.

What are the health benefits of Purple Rice?

Cholesterol -  Anthocyanins and tocols in purple rice can prevent lipid oxidation and reduce cholesterol oxidation.  Black rice consumption increases the blood lipid levels (HDL) which in turn lower the cholesterol level and triglycerides.

Blood Pressure - Anthocyanins are a type of flavonoid that can help reduce hypertension and atherosclerotic plaque formation in the arteries along with helping control cholesterol.

Blood Sugar - Studies show pancreatic beta-cells, responsible for producing insulin in high glucose environments, are increased up to 50% with anthocyanin extracts.  With high fiber content, nutrients and antioxidants it can slow absorption of sugar in the bloodstream.

Arthritis - Due to anti-inflammatory properties that also reduce swelling, these components can significantly reduce the irritation and inflammation caused by arthritis.

Inflammation -  Studies suggest black rice bran can repress histamine, a compound that causes inflammation.   Topical lab experiments reduced skin inflammation by up to 30%.  Internally, this reduction of inflammation can lessen numerous ailments such as arthritis, asthma, allergies, digestive issues, autoimmune and nerve disorders.

Obesity - Obesity is closely related to metabolic disorders such as hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia and hypertension.  In labs studies, black rice extracts lowered body fat and glucose levels but also liver weight.  In addition to its high fiber content, this rice is an excellent addition to dietary programs.

Energy - Black rice is rich in fiber to help you retain energy from foods and feel full longer.

Liver - Black rice can reduce fats in the liver relieving many related illnesses and helps the liver function and heal from toxins such as alcohol and chemicals.

Digestion - Black rice is gluten-free, yet sticky to slow down digestion and allow insulin to process.  The bran is high in fiber with anti-inflammation properties to aid food to digest smoother.  This can prevent constipation, bloating and other digestive disorders.

Toxins - Harmful toxins enter our bodies daily causing the formation of free radicals (odd electron), attacking healthy molecules and stealing electrons, creating more free radicals that create a domino effect.  Without the help of antioxidants, free radicals will overproduce and cause more serious damage, such as signs of aging, illness and cancers.  Antioxidants neutralize free radicals by donating one of their own electrons, ending the electron-"stealing" reaction. The antioxidant nutrients themselves don’t become free radicals by donating an electron because they are stable in either form They act as scavengers, helping to prevent cell and tissue damage that could lead to cellular damage and disease.

What is the difference?

We are often asked how our product compares to other purple rice based products such as Kares Purple Rice and Royale PR.  We are unable to give a comparison due to our lack of knowledge about their products.  We are unsure of the purity and additives and origin of a competitor’s product.  We can only disclose our processes and purity levels.  

Purple Rice Products uses Thailand harvested rice through a trusted distributor of Thai foods who travels to Thailand during harvest and hand-selects locally grown rices for quality and freshness.  It is inspected upon entry to the US and stored in climate controlled warehousing facilities.  We then take the raw whole grains and process into bran, flour and capsules and store in refrigeration until sale.  By performing our own processing we are able to guarantee the purity, cleanliness and freshness of our products.  We only use Thailand rice due to their strict laws against pesticides and GMOs in addition to the potency of their strain of black rice.

What is the difference in Micronized Purple Rice Flour and Concentrated Purple Rice Bran?

Micronizing is a newer technology of milling that is designed to reduce the temperature of the milling process traditional stone milling produced.  Stone milling creates friction and the temperature often depletes many nutrients in grains.  Micronized milling uses industrial speed metal milling that retains all nutrients in grains.  Our micronized flour is milled from whole grain and includes both the outer layer and inner kernel.  Both parts of the rice contain valuable nutrients like fiber, vitamins and antioxidants.  Our flour is a fine powder that can be used to bake, for protein shakes, gravies and sauces and as a gluten-free alternative to flour.  

Concentrated Purple Rice Bran is a process we created to grind and extract the outer black layer, or bran, of the rice that contains the highest levels of anthocyanins.  This product is used to provide a higher dose of antioxidants to the blood system for more noticeable results or during illness.  Many customers take a teaspoon with a small glass of warm water and mix into a drink to start out their day and others have found it better mixed into yogurt or oatmeal in the morning.

How many capsules should I take daily?

Depending on the health challenges you are taking purple rice to relieve, 1-2 capsules of either strength a day is recommended.  If you need a higher dose, the concentrated capsules are recommended with increasing to 2-3 capsules daily.

Some customers take capsules and a teaspoon of concentrated bran for highest potency.

What are the Side Effects?
